Dearest Student-Musicians,
"It started out as a feeling
Which then grew into a hope
Which then turned into a quiet thought
Which then turned into a quiet word ..."
- The Call, Regina Spektor
When I joined this community 5 years ago, I was excited at the prospect of forming a group dedicated to marrying the virtues of our Lasallian Core Principles with the ideals of professional choral performance. One by one, each person hopped onboard this call to adventure and service.
"And then that word grew louder and louder
'Til it was a battle cry
I'll come back when you call me
No need to say goodbye ..."
We have served our school community through liturgies and prayer services, and peace and justice weeks. We have served our local community by singing at the annual Oakland Police Officer's memorial service and the Diocese of Oakland's annual senior mass. We have served our global community when we embarked on our pilgrimage to the Philippines two years ago when we used our voices to lift others through song, and when it was necessary, we used our hands and feet to help those who were in need.
"Pick a star on the dark horizon
and follow the light
We'll come back when it's over
No need to say goodbye ..."
I am proud of what we have accomplished over the past 5 years and I know that we will all take these experiences forward as we continue to build a world that God might perhaps better recognize. It has been an honor and it has been a privilege to serve as the conductor of the Magnificat Chamber Singers. May we meet again, somewhere along the lit horizon.
In closing, please take these words with you wherever you go:
"Now we're back to the beginning
It's just a feeling and no one knows yet
But just because they can't feel it too
Doesn't mean that you have to forget
Let your memories grow stronger and stronger
'Til they're before your eyes
You'll come back when they call you
No need to say goodbye ..."
